Tonight, Friday September 14, at 6:30pm, CUJA is holding the first Movie Night of the year!

To open up with our series of Movie Nights, we will be showing The Secret World of Arrietty. The anime is a 2010 product of Studio Ghibli, what is known as the Walt Disney of Japan which brought us the Academy Award winning Spirited Away.

The film tells the story of Arrietty, a young Borrower who lives under the floorboards of a typical household. She eventually befriends Sho, a human boy with a heart condition since birth who is living with his great aunt Sadako. When Sadako’s maid Haru becomes suspicious of the floorboard’s disturbance, Arrietty and her family must escape detection, even if it means leaving their beloved home.

The movie will be in Japanese with English subtitles so this will be a great way to practice your language for those who are studying Japanese.

We hope to see you all.

Hi Everyone,

We’d to start by saying the past week has been incredibly emotional, not only because of the images of Japan that continued to fill the news, but rather primarily because of the positive reaction that we experienced from the Carleton community. The fundraiser was a huge success, with about $14, 500 raised in only 5 days. Our donors left so much more than a monetary value- they have left us with warmth, compassion, and hope.

Support has also come from friends who have donated cookies in exchange for all donations (courtesy of Boko Bakery), art work (courtesy of Eepmon) and handmade jewelry (courtesy of Mika Yoshimoto). Many students also donated their time and donated to this cause – CUJA members and non-members alike. Without them, we would not have been able to mobilize as quickly and with such force as we did.

We have also had huge support from the Carleton University administration, in particular Roseann O’Reilly Runte (President and Vice-Chancellor) and Suzanne Blanchard (Associate Vice President) who helped us inform the community on a scale that CUJA could only hope to be reach. They also arranged for us to have a table despite there being no available spaces to rent out. They also continued to check up on us with kind words of support.

The instructors of Japanese Language (Yoko Azuma-Prikryl, Elizabeth Sowka, and Mika Yoshimoto) have also been part of our support team, giving words of encouragement and helping CUJA spread its hopeful message. Fellow clubs and associations have also been very supportive, including the Muslim Students Association (who supported us while we were haphazardly putting this event together). Many other groups and associations have also committed themselves to our cause, and will be holding events in the coming weeks with portions of their proceeds going towards disaster relief efforts. We will continue to update here with information as it develops.

We cannot begin to express our gratitude to all members of Carleton University for their support. You have validated our belief that there is no better place for CUJA to exist. You have shown great resolve and great kindness to not only us at CUJA but also to the people in the affected areas of Japan. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

Love always,

CUJA

Oliver’s has graciously offered to donate proceeds from this week’s Thirsty Thursday (Mar 24, Oliver’s 1st Floor, 8pm to 11pm!) cover charge! Its a great time to take a breather before the last push of finals assignments!! So be sure to pop by and have a drink to honor the victims of the earthquake and tsunami (drinking is part of Japanese culture, after all)! See more details at their Facebook event page!

Also CUJA will be holding its final movie night of this session, and will be showing Departures (おくりびと) at Azrieli Pavilion 132 on Mar 25, from 6pm! It is an Academy Award winning movie about our ability to overcome adversity! It was shown last semester by SLALS, so if you weren’t able to catch it the first time around, don’t miss out! If you did already see it, and loved it, definitely come by! CUJA will also be selling snacks (onigiri are makin’ a come back!) and calligraphy pieces, with all funds going to our funds already raised for disaster relief efforts in Japan! We will also be collecting messages of hope on origami paper that will be made into cranes, as mentioned on our last post!

We hope to see you all at some of these events! Lets do it for Japan!!!!

Please see the following, created by Kenta Shimohira. They are messages of hope from Carleton to Japan. We hope to collect enough messages to make 千羽鶴 (a thousand origami cranes) to help grant our wish for the prosperity of not only the people of Japan, but of people all over the world.

Please feel free to leave a message of hope here, which will transcribed onto a piece of origami paper and folded into a crane. Once we have collected 1000 cranes, we will send them off to Japan.
